Pushpa Gujral Science City in collaboration with Punjab Biodiversity Board (PBB) celebrated International Biodiversity Day on May 22, 2019. This year the theme of International Day for Biological Diversity celebration was “Our Biodiversity, Our Food, Our Health”. Celebration of International Biodiversity Day at Science City was a significant step to enrich the knowledge of the masses about biodiversity resources and their conservation. About 100 farmers and 100 school students participated in the event. A “Traditional Beej Mela” followed by panel discussion with the subject experts was organized on this occasion. Dr.C.S Aulakh, Director, School of Organic Farming, PAU, Ludhiana, Dr. S.K. Sandhu, Sr. Scientist (Oilseeds), Dept. of Plant Breeding and Genetics, PAU, Ludhiana, Dr Naresh Gulati, Agriculture office, Jalandhar, Dr. Gurdip Singh, Agriculture Officer, Kapurthala, Dr. Jasbir Singh, Agriculture Officer, Ludhiana, Dr.Umendra Dutt and Mr. Baljit Kang from Kheti Virasat Mission were the resource persons for the panel discussion which was chaired by Dr. Neelima Jerath, Director General, Science City. It was concluded that the farmers must preserve traditional seeds and grow traditional varieties as these are source of valuable local germplasm for rare traits. A Science Play Competition on Biodiversity Conservation was also organized on the occasion.
