World Ozone Day

Pushpa Gujral Science City, Kapurthala organized a webinar on “Ozone for Life: 35 years of Ozone Layer Protection” on the occasion of World Ozone Day on September 16, 2020. The objective of the event was to raise awareness among participants about the depletion of Ozone Layer, its importance and remedial measures for its conservation. Dr. Neelima Jerath, Director General, Science City presided over the occasion. She said that collective decisions and actions guided by science are the only way to solve major global crisis. In this year of the Covid-19 pandemic, that has brought such social and economic hardship, the ozone treaties message of working together in harmony with nature and for the collective good is more important than ever. Er. Anuradha Sharma, Environmental Engineer, Punjab Pollution Control Board, Patiala was the guest speaker. She said that the fast depletion of the stratospheric ozone layer allows UV radiation to penetrate earth`s atmosphere and causes several direct and indirect harmful effects on human beings as well as on other living beings. The most severe and serious effect of UV radiation on human beings is skin cancer. The other health disorders of UV radiation are cataract of eyes, mutations and loss of immunity. Dr. Rajesh Grover, Director Science City, was also present on the occasion. He urged the students to protect and save ozone layer by planting more and more trees, use public transport and also emphasized on the usage of renewable sources of energy.

Essay Writing Competition

Essay Writing Competition was conducted on the theme “The Ozone Hole: Closing the Gap”. The competition got an overwhelming response with about 165 entries.
