Pushpa Gujral Science City celebrated World Environment Day during June 2-5, 2021 in collaboration with Punjab Pollution Control Board and Centre for Environment Communication. Online activities like Quiz Competition (02.06.2021), Environment Film Festival (03.06.2021 to 05.06.2021) and Panel discussion (05.06.2021) marked the celebration of WED 2021.
Online Quiz Competition on “Nature, environment and sustainable development” was organized on 02.06.2021. About 100 school students from all over Punjab participated in online quiz competition. Mr. Saurav Gupta, IFS, Director, Directorate of Environment and Climate Change, Govt. of Punjab was the chief Guest at the occasion. He said that the state government had launched “Mission Tandarust Punjab”. Under this mission about 85.44 lakh trees had been planted and 66 lakh saplings of native species had been distributed under the “Ghar Ghar Haryali Programme”. Mr. Gupta further delivered an expert talk on “Climate Change – Issues and Mitigation Strategies”. He summarizes the existing and future policies and programs addressing climate mitigation and adaptation. Mitigation strategies reduce greenhouse gas emissions from development, and adaptation strategies make communities more resilient to the effects of a changing climate.
Dr. S.S Marwaha, Chairman, Punjab Pollution Control Board launched the Environment Film Festival On 03.06.2021. He remarked that it has become more important to conserve the nature to restore our ecosystem when the entire world is fighting the pandemic COVID-19. A film titled “A Second Hand Life” was screened highlighting the plight of young children involved in collection of e-waste. The filmmaker Mr. Piyush Sharma interacted with the participants and shared important incidents that prompted him to make this film.
Dr. RBS Rawat, IFS, Former PCCF & HoFF, Uttarakhand was the special Guest on 04.06.2021. Films on Pollution and Species Conservation (on Myrstica swamps in Western Ghats of India and Amur Falcons from NE, India) were screened. Filmmakers Ms.Bano Haralu and Mr.Ram Alluri interacted with the participants. The interaction with the filmmakers was moderated by Dr. Alka Tomar from CEC, Delhi who highlighted the role of films in moulding public opinion.
A film on “ECO Grants: Incubating Youth Idea’s” was screened on 05.06.2021. The film presented 10 innovative solutions developed by the youth to address sustainable development issues. Ms.Kunjpreet Arora, Eco Grantee cum Film Maker conversed with the participants and shared experiences. A panel discussion on “Ecosystem Restoration to Achieve SDG Targets” was organized which was chaired by Dr. Vikas Verma, Regional Head, UNDP. Dr. Neelima Jerath, Director General, Pushpa Gujral Science City moderated the panel discussion. Other panellists were Dr. Nidhi Nagabhatla, UNU-CRIS, United Nations University and Er. Krunesh Garg, Member Secretary, Punjab Pollution Control Board. The recommendations given by the panel were mainly focused on Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), sustainable use of terrestrial ecosystems and reversing land degradation and biodiversity loss.
PGSC also launched SD-ASK at this occasion to engage students through interesting monthly activities with a view to creating awareness around SDGs, sensitizing kids to become more socially and environmentally responsible and encourage them to take positive steps towards SDG achievement in the state as well as the nation.
More than 500 college and school students, teachers, foresters, researchers and environmentalists regularly participated in all the events held during 03.07.2021 to 05.07.2021.
