International Day of Women and Girls in Science was celebrated at Pushpa Gujral Science City on February 11, 2020 in collaboration with NCSTC, Department of Science and Technology, GOI. Ms. Deepti Uppal, Deputy Commissioner, Kapurthala was the Chief Guest at this occasion. Speaking on the occasion, Ms Uppal said,” Science and gender equality are both vital for the achievement of the internationally agreed development goals, including the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. Over the past 15 years lot of effort have been made in inspiring and engaging women and girls in science. Yet women and girls continue to be excluded from participating fully in science”. Also present at this occasion, Dr. Renuka Bhatti, former Head, Department of Physics, HMV College Jalandhar while addressing the young girls said that this day celebrates achievements of women in science and also signifies need of gender equality in field of science , technology and innovation. She added that this day inspires young women and girls students to undertake science education more to make a career in this digital era.
Dr. Neelima Jerath , Director General Science City informed that Pushpa Gujral Science City is setting up a Women Technology Park supported by Department of Science & Technology, GoI. The park is an attempt to ensure that the benefits of science and technology percolates to the rural women of the surrounding villages and provide them livelihood opportunities to enable rural women (without specific skills) to earn their own livelihood in a dignified way.
To mark this day Science Play and Poster Making competition were also organized.
